Social Media as the Secret Search Engine: Why Your Business Can’t Afford to Ignore It
Welcome back, friends and entrepreneurs! As your Santa Barbara web guide, I’ve helped hundreds—if not thousands—of businesses and creators across California and beyond develop winning online strategies for the past 30 years. One thing has become overwhelmingly clear in recent years: If you’re not leveraging social media as part of your marketing strategy, you’re leaving serious money—and visibility—on the table.
A lot of business owners know they need to be on Google. “We have to show up in search results!” they say. And they’re absolutely right. But those same people often underestimate the power of another search engine—one that customers are using more and more every year. That search engine is social media.
Let’s dive deep into why social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest are not just social spaces, but vital search engines in your customer's journey—and how you can harness their full power to attract and convert more clients.
Why Social Media Is as Important as Google
Traditionally, when people thought of search engines, they pictured Google first and maybe Bing or Yahoo second. But those days are fading, especially for consumers under 50. Today, when people are looking for ideas, inspiration, local recommendations, or new products, they turn to the feeds and search bars of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest.
Consider for a moment how you search for a new restaurant, hair stylist, wedding venue, or even tech gadget. Sure, you might start with a Google search—but just as often, you’ll gather opinions, testimonials, and real visuals from social media. You’ll look at review images, user-generated portfolio work, story highlights, reels, boards, and much more.
In many ways, social media platforms have become portable, visual, and interactive search engines all their own. Having an active, discoverable presence on the right platforms isn’t just “good for business”—it’s essential to being found in the modern digital world.
What Happens When You Ignore Social Media?
I see this all the time with local and national businesses: They put hours (and thousands of dollars!) into their website and SEO, but neglect Instagram, Facebook, or Pinterest. Maybe they post occasionally, but it's sporadic and half-hearted. The result? They’re invisible where their customers are actually searching, scrolling, and making buying decisions.
If a potential customer Googles your business and also checks Instagram or Pinterest but finds nothing—what impression does that leave? At best, you seem out of touch. At worst, they go with a competitor whose social presence feels alive, engaging, and current.
Remember: Social media is a discovery engine, often acting as the first stop in your customer’s journey. According to recent studies, 54% of social media users use platforms to research products, and a similar amount are directly influenced by what they find there before buying.
Still think you don’t need to be there?
What Type of Content Should You Post?
Now, maybe you’re convinced—at least a little. But a common question I hear from business owners is: “Okay, SB Web Guy, what do I actually post? I’m not a content creator. I don’t want to dance on TikTok or embarrass myself!”
Here’s the good news. Not all social media content has to be viral, flashy, or funny. Start with the basics:
Portfolio and Work Samples
If you’re a web designer, graphic artist, contractor, interior designer, or in any other visual business, upload high-quality images of your best work. Think before-and-after shots, completed projects, happy customers with your product, or even a slideshow of your process.
Product or Service Showcase
Selling physical products? Show them in action: how they’re used, close-up details, variations, and unique features. Offer video snippets, unboxings, or even simple explainer clips about what makes your offering different.
Process and Behind-the-Scenes
People love to see the “how” behind the end result. If you’re a cafe owner, show how you craft your signature dish. If you’re a jewelry designer, film a quick behind-the-scenes look at your workstation or your sourcing process.
Customer Testimonials and Reviews
Nothing beats word-of-mouth. Share happy customer stories, screenshots of Google or Yelp reviews (with permission!), and candid feedback. Bonus points for video or photo testimonials.
Educational Content and Tips
You’re the expert—prove it. Provide quick tips, how-to guides, infographics, or answer frequently-asked questions. These posts add value and keep people coming back to your page.
Relevant Industry News and Trends
Share your take on news or developments in your field. For example, a Santa Barbara realtor might post about local housing trends, or an artist could highlight new materials or techniques they’re experimenting with.
Events, Announcements, or Updates
Are you hosting a workshop, running a sale, or moving locations? Social media is your direct line to past, present, and future customers.
Don’t forget: Authenticity and consistency matter more than perfection. Your audience wants to see that you are active, engaged, and invested in your craft.
Which Platform Is Right For You?
This is a big one. Too many folks spread themselves thin trying to be everywhere at once, but the real secret is to focus on where your customers are. So let’s break down the strengths of the core platforms for most small business owners:
Good for just about everyone—especially local businesses, service providers, and those targeting older demographics. Facebook is perfect for building communities (Groups), sharing updates, and running targeted ads.
Fantastic for anything visual: artists, designers, bakeries, restaurants, fashion, fitness, and more. Instagram’s popularity with 16-40 year olds is unrivaled, and its e-commerce integrations make it easy to sell directly.
A powerhouse for inspiration, planning, and buying decisions, especially among women aged 25-54. Pinterest serves as a visual search engine for home decor, design, fashion, crafts, recipes, and weddings—but it’s growing in other niches, too. It’s severely underutilized by small business owners, even though over 550 million people use Pinterest every month to get ideas and plan purchases! If you have beautiful visuals or tutorials, get them on Pinterest.
For B2B companies, leadership consultants, coaches, or service professionals targeting other businesses, LinkedIn remains essential. It’s not as “sexy” as Instagram or TikTok, but the connections you make can be priceless.
TikTok
Once just for teens, now home to millions of older users. If your audience is under 40, or you’re comfortable with short, creative videos, TikTok can get you immense reach in a hurry—even for niches like home repair, fitness, real estate, and art.
YouTube
The king of “how-to”, YouTube can turn you into a trusted authority through tutorials, explainer videos, vlogs, and interviews. If you’re up for making longer-form content, start building your channel.
The Golden Rule: Fish Where the Fish Are.
Before you launch headfirst into every new platform, pause and research where your target audience already spends their time. Ask your customers. Check what your competitors are doing. Use the built-in search functions to look up questions or keywords related to your business.
That’s how you pick your starting platform. You can always expand later.
How to Get Inspiration and Plan Content
One of the best ways to kickstart your social media strategy is to do a little “market research” that doesn’t feel like work. Browse the pages of competitors, complementary brands, or even unrelated businesses that seem to do a great job engaging their audience.
Make note of:
- Post types that get lots of likes/comments (carousel images, short reels, infographics, user testimonials, Q&As, etc.)
- Tone of voice—formal, lighthearted, educational, witty, inspirational
- The frequency of their posts
- Their use of hashtags or stories/highlights
- Any popular themes or content buckets you can adapt to your own business
Social media is as much about listening as posting. The more you observe what’s working for others, especially in your area or industry, the more ideas you’ll have for your own account.
Crafting Your Social Media Bio and Links
Here’s a piece of expert advice I see even seasoned businesses miss: Fill out your social media bio. Completely!
Whether on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, or LinkedIn, your bio is often the very first place people look to figure out who you are, what you do, and why they should care. Don’t leave it blank, vague, or outdated.
Include:
- A clear description of your services/products
- Geographic or niche focus (e.g., “Serving Santa Barbara and nearby areas”)
- A direct call to action (e.g., “Book your free consult,” “Shop now,” “See our portfolio below”)
- A link to your website, lead magnet, or booking page
Use link tools like Linktree or Campsite if you want to list several URLs at once, and keep everything up to date.
Consistency Beats Perfection
You might be thinking: “SB Web Guy, I don’t have time to post every day! Won’t my account just fade away?” Here’s my rule: Start with a manageable schedule—post once or twice a week, and focus on quality and consistency over quantity.
Batch schedule your content if possible with tools like Buffer, Later, or Hootsuite. Set aside one afternoon a month to shoot a batch of photos, write caption drafts, or plan your Canva graphics. Over time, you’ll get faster and more efficient.
And—don’t get hung up on perfection! The most important step is to participate. You can always level up your quality as you go.
Community and Visibility: Social Media’s Hidden Superpowers
At the heart of every good social media strategy is a two-way relationship. Don’t just broadcast—engage! Respond to comments, thank people for reviews, ask open-ended questions, and follow/like other local or industry businesses.
Not only does this grow your audience, it boosts your visibility in the ever-changing platform algorithms. The more quality interaction your posts receive, the more new people will see your business.
You have the power to build an authentic community around your brand—no matter your size, industry, or location.

Final Thoughts: Take the Leap!
Social media is not just a fun distraction for teenagers—it’s where your customers are searching, deciding, and spending. Treat platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest as search engines in their own right. Fill them with content that smartly showcases your expertise, your products, and the value you bring to your community.
Start with one or two platforms. Post your best work, teach and inspire, and always keep the conversation going. Your presence and engagement will pay dividends in visibility, trust, and long-term growth.
This isn’t just advice—it’s the proven path I’ve seen transform solo entrepreneurs into thriving, resilient brands, right here in Santa Barbara and around the globe.
